Make your Christmas feast affordable

Make your Christmas feast affordable
The turkey, the stuffing, the mulled wine and the crackers – Christmas dinner is without a doubt the ultimate family feast of the year.

There’s no doubt that popping on your favourite holiday album and cooking up a storm can be a lot of fun. But while the Christmas dinner is a pivotal part of the celebrations, it can be expensive if you’ve got a lot of people to feed! These money saving tips can help you avoid turning to short term loans lenders, breaking your credit card or dipping into savings whilst still keeping your Christmas feast affordable and enjoyable.
Consider what you need

There are often many additional items at the Christmas table that are there for decoration or sentimental value, such as a centrepiece, table gifts and crackers. If these aren’t essential, you may want to consider skipping them this year, or investing in smaller, less expensive versions instead. You can also make decorations such as paper chains with materials around the home, and it provides a great opportunity for everyone in the family to get stuck in!

Look for deals

There are many supermarkets offering deals at this time of year, so make sure to leaf through the coupon booklets and check out deals online to see how you can save money with the Christmas food shop. Make a list of only what you need, and try to buy economy or store-brand where possible, as it’s often cheaper than leading expensive brand names yet comparable when it comes to quality.

Make it yourself

When it comes to canapés, sauces or desserts, it is often the case that you have everything you need to make these things yourself at home from scratch. While it might take a bit more time to prep for dinner, it will ultimately save you having to buy these items at prices that are often inflated around this time of year.

Get some help

If you’re putting on a spread for guests and family, you may consider asking each guest to bring one item to contribute, giving the affair more of a potluck feel whilst easing the strain on your wallet. You can then let everyone pitch in to help set the table and cook to truly make it a team effort.

Buy what you need

For many, Christmas dinner is one of the few times the family is gathered around the table together in one place, and it’s therefore tempting to go overboard! To keep costs down, buy a turkey that will feed your guests and be finished as opposed to a large bird that with  leftovers – unless you plan to use the leftovers for a turkey curry or turkey sandwiches the following day; and be realistic about how many vegetables you really need to avoid buying too much, and spending an excess in the process.

By sticking to these guidelines, you can still enjoy Christmas dinner knowing that your budget won’t be stretched to the max – although the same might not be said for your cooking skills!
